Carat of a Diamond

The weight of a diamond is measured in carats. One carat is divided into 100 "points" - so a diamond of 75 points weights .75 carats. Five carats are equivalent to one gram in weight.

The value of a diamond is not determined by the carat weight alone. Two diamonds can be of equal carat weight, but not the same value, due to their cut, colour and clarity.

Two one carat diamonds do not measure the same, while an ideal cut one carat round brilliant cut diamond would measure approximately 6.5mm in diameter, there could be a great variation to this.

Example given:

  1. 6mm one carater (too deep cut)
  2. 6.9mm one carater (too shallow)
